Project Title: Development of Micropropagation Technology for Large Scale Cultivation of Jatropha: A Potential Biofuel Plant

Objectives:

  1. Collection of germplasm, establishment and preparation of database
  2. Standardization of in vitro micropropagation methods
  3. Establishment of in vitro raised plantlets & field evaluation of tissue culture raised plants

Work done so far:

  1. Jatropha curcas germplasm from different states of Northeast India have been collected. The ex vitro plantlets were raised and maintained in the Green House.

  2. The seed oil percentage was determined for all the collected germplasm and a database is prepared (Table).

  3. In vitro micropropagation method from embryonic meristem explants has been standardized for the collected Jatropha germplasm by manipulation of media composition, supplementation of plant growth regulator, and factors affecting elongation of in vitro shoots and induction of rooting. Efforts are being made to improve the in vitro plant regeneration and multiplication efficiency.

Work to be done further in this project:

  1. Germplasm will be collected from remaining states of Northeast India and various districts of Assam. The oil percentage will be determined for the collected germplasm and database will be prepared.

  2. Efficacy of nodal meristem explants for micropropagation will be evaluated. The standardized micropropagation method from embryonic meristem explants will be employed for multiplication of germplasm to be collected, by manipulation of factors affecting optimal regeneration.
